About Philip Koonce

Philip Koonce was born January 29, 1765 at his parents' farm home in Craven County, North Carolina. He served in the Revolutionary War. (D.A.R. Patriot Index 395). He was the son of George Koonce. Philip's Revolutionary War pension application (No. S-4485) submitted in 1832 shows that about 10 or 11 years after the war he moved to Sumner County, Tennessee, where he lived a little over a year. He moved to Davidson County, Tennessee. From there to Wilson County, Tennessee where he lived about six years before moving to Lincoln County, Tennessee. Philip served in 1810 as the first Chairman of the Lincoln County Court.

On December 29, 1787 Philip first married Nancy Griffis (Griffiths) probably in what is now Jones County, North Carolina. Nancy Griffis (Griffiths) was born July 20, 1770. She died May 19, 1810 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Their children are shown in Philip's second wife's family Bible.

Philip Koonce married for a second time to Nancy Dodson McGee. Nancy and Philip appear to have resided in Lincoln County, Tennessee during their marriage and this is where their four children were born. Philip died February 2, 1841. His Will dated March 5, 1833 was probated in April 1842. Record in Lincoln County, Tennessee Will Book No. 1, page 203. Nancy died October 23, 1853 at the home of her son William McGee (Obituary in Fayetteville Observer, issue of October 27, 1853, in Lincoln County, Tennessee).

Notes through the years ...Other Information About Philip: LCT An old record of Stewarts Creek Baptist Church shows the church was statred in 1810 and that Philip Koonce gave one acre of land for the church to be built on. The record also shows that the land was close to the ferry across the Elk River and that enton Locker B: ca. 1854 remembered a church there. The Records of the church sh ow that Andrew McCarney (Philips son in Law) was a member of the church. Pension application No. S-4485 REv. War./ 1840 Census of Revolutionary War Pensionsers - L:incoln C Tenn. Philip Koonce age 75. DASR Patriot Index pg 395, File # S4485 GSA - In JA nuary or Feb. Philip Koonce became a substitute for his father George Koonce. He went in under the command of Capt. James Green. A short time later he was placed under the command of Capt. Joseph Rhodes, Lt. Samuel Lavender, Ensign John Koonce. This Company was attached to Col. John Francis Avery's Regiment. After coming home from the war in the spring or summer of 1781 he became a substitute for Howard Brown (relationship unknown) in a company of drafted Militia from Jones Co. N.C. Craven Co. at that time. Revolutionary War pension application shows Philip Swearing that 10-11 years after the War he had moved to Sumner County Tenn. where he lived 1 year Moving to Davidson County and from there to Wilson Co., Where he lived for about 6 years then to Lincoln County. Bob Allen Gray says that Les in Grease I and Grease 2 "Dennis Stewart" is a desendant of Needham Perry Koonce--- and also that Admiral Frank Kelso who is Commder of the Atlantic Fleet is from Robert Manley Koonce. Nancy Dodson McGee Koonce was born on a homestead in Western N.C. (could now be Eastern Tenn.) her Father Elijah Dodson, mother Martha "Patsey (Maiden name unknown) Father died when Nancy was age her mother raised her in Wilkes County, N.C. - There she married John McGee in Wilkes County N>C. Aug 11, 1800 (bondsman Issac Hagler John's brother in law) John was the son of David McGee of the Beavercreek area of Wilkes County N.C. On April 24, 12 John purchased 80 acres of land from his father. Deed Book C-1 -pg. 394. John died in January 1806 - provisions laid off for his widow .. Feb 15 1806 Will Book 2 page 175 Nancy's Brother Joel Dodson was named administrator of the Will . Nancy and Jo were recorded in the 1800 Census living in the home of David McGee , John's Father.

Nancy Dodson McGee Koonce

Nancy Dodson (McGee Koonce) [1782-1853]was born on a homestead in Western NC. (now Eastern TN).

Her father was Elijah Dodson, mother Martha "Patsy" Stubblefield. Her father died when Nancy was age 2. Her mother raised her in Wilkes County, NC.

She married John McGee in Wilkes County, NC. on Aug 11, 1800. John was the son of David McGee of the Beavercreek area of Wilkes County, NC. John died in January 1806.

From Wilkes County, NC. records:

On April 24, 1792 John purchased 80 acres of land from his father. Deed Book C-1 -pg. 394.

John died in January 1806 - Provisions laid off for his widow .. Feb 15, 1806 Will Book 2 page 175.

Nancy's Brother Joel Dodson was named administrator of the Will.

(Nancy and Joel were recorded in the 1800 Census living in the home of David McGee , John's Father.)

Nancy Dodson McGee married (2) Phillip Koonce [1765-1841] on Oct 4, 1810 in Lincoln Co., TN after the death of his first wife, Nancy Griffis.

{The lineage of Phillip Koonce, although well documented, is often confused by the fact that both wives were named "Nancy". Census, court records, will, and some of his (Revolutionary War) pension applications do not name "Nancy's" maiden surname.

Phillip Koonce is buried in the McGee -McCartney-Kelson Cemetery in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN., as is Nancy (Dodson). Nancy (Griffis) is believed to have died in Lincoln, TN also; but her burial is undetermined.}
