About Philo Dibble, II

Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, 1847–1868

Dibble, Philo

Birth Date: 17 Oct. 1835
Death Date: 4 Dec. 1915 Gender: Male Age: 14 Company: Thomas S. Williams Freight Train (1851)

Pioneer Information: When he was 97 years old, David Dibble, one of Philo's sons, recalled that his father crossed the plains (at age 11) with his 19–year–old uncle, Sidney Kent, in 1848. (The City In–Between, 275) This recollection is difficult to prove or disprove. If Philo did go to Utah in 1848, he then would have had to return to Iowa in either 1849 or 1850 because he is on the 1850 Iowa census (enumerated in September 1850) with his family. His uncle Sidney did not go back to Iowa until 1854 when he returned to assist his mother to come to Utah in 1855. As stated in Philo's obituary, "he came to Utah with his parents"––in 1851. The obituary makes no mention of his coming to Utah in 1848. Philo, Sr., mentioned in a sketch submitted for Jenson's biographical encyclopedia that "in 1851 he Emigrated his family to Utah." (Biographical sketches, box 29, fd. 1, item 11, Church History Library) He made no mention that his son, Philo, traveled to Utah in 1848. Philo Jr.'s travel to Utah in 1851 with his family is certain, but his travel to Utah in 1848 is less certain.
