He was a skillful Surveyor, a successful farmer, good neighbor and intelligent magistrate and Legislator. He served several months in the Continental Army, and was at the Battle of Saratoga. He kept a store and was the first trader in Stockbridge, Mass. He was a Surveyor on the so-called "New Hampshire Grants". He settled in New Haven, VT. in 1784, which Town he repeatedly represented in the Vermont Legislature. Member of the Constitutional Convention 1786. Alderman of the City of Vergennes,VT. and Civil Magistrate for more than twenty years. He m. 1st, at Stockbridge, Mass. Oct. 1775. Sarah (b. June 30 1753 d. Aug. 10 1800.) dau. of Joseph Patterson (b. Aug. 27, 1710.) and Lydia Mereaul of Newton. He m. 2nd, May 6, 1802. Mrs. Elizabeth (Backus) Rosseter, (b. Nov. 24, 1766. d. Salisbury, Vt. July 20, 1828.) widow of Timothy Rosseter and dau. of Sylvanus Backus aud Elizabeth Gamble of Wyndham, Conn.
