A lawyer & suffragist, Couzins was the first Missouri woman to graduate from law school (1871), the second to be admitted to a bar association & the third allowed to practice law nationwide. She was a member of the Woman Suffrage Association of Missouri & served as a delegate to the American Equal Rights Association convention in 1869. She joined with Elizabeth Stanton to form the more radical National Woman Suffrage Association. She was also the first female U.S. marshal & was buried with her U.S. marshal's badge pinned to her chest.
