Trying to find the correct information on this family has been quite a difficult task. At first, it appeared that Achille had two wives, Sarah Dupéré and Nathalie (Thalie) Deschênes. After much research, it was found that Achille actually was a witness to the marriage of his brother, Ambroise, to Nathalie. Further research found three children of Ambroise and Nathalie and three children of Achille and Sarah. Actual birth records have been found for only five of the six children of Achille (2) and Ambroise (3). Pierre and Mary (children of Achille and Sarah) were found on census records, which gave the place of birth as Canada. Jean (Johnnie) was born at L'Île-Verte, Québec, but a search of the available parish repertoires have failed to locate a record of the birth of Pierre in L'Île-Verte. He married Sarah Dupéré, 29 Jan 1860 in St-Bruno, Van Buren, Maine, b. ABT 1835, (daughter of Joseph Dupéré and Thérèse Fournier) d. 12 Oct 1900 in East Derry, NH, buried 15 Oct 1900 in East Derry, NH.

Baptismal record shows
Family Group Sheet for Pierre Achille Auclair
Page 38 of the 1860 Maine Census of Aroostook County, Township 18, Range 7, shows the following: Achille O'Clair, Age31, Laborer, born in Canada. Wife shown as Sara, Age 28, born in Canada, and Joseph, Age 4, born in New Brunswick. Joseph was Sara's son before Achille's marriage to her. According to Joseph's marriage certificate, it states that Vital Theriault was his father; therefore, Achille's was his stepfather. Pg. 24 of the 1870 Maine Census of Van Buren Plantation, Maine, Pg. 361, line 9 shows the following: Achille Oclaire, age 40, born in Canada, laborer, cannot read or write. Wife is shown as Sarah, age 38, born Canada, keeping House. Four children. Joseph, age 14, born Maine, Peter, age 9, born Canada, John, age 3, born Canada, Mary, age 7, born Canada. Relationship Notes for Pierre Achille Auclair and Marie (Sarah) Dupere Married at St. Bruno Church, 336 Main St., Van Buren, ME. Marie (Sarah) Dupere Joseph Dupere and his wife,Therese, had two daughters that went by the name Sarah. The first Sarah was baptized on Dec. 6, 1832 in St. Georges de Cacouna Parish, Quebec province and was named Marie Sara Dupere, but in the same parish it shows this Marie Sara Dupere died in Mar 1832 (the year should be 1833 as it says she was two month's old at time of burial). The other daughter who went by Sarah, was actually baptized under the name Marie Duperre on Oct. 5, 1835. Though this daughter was not addressed as Sarah in the records, this is the person who became known as Sarah Dupere. My conclusion is that the parents used the name Sarah for this daughter as it was customary in that time period to name the next girl/boy after one that had previously died. Born and baptized on the same day with Godparents for Marie (Sarah #2) being Edward Charret and Marie Anne Peltier. In the marriage record of Sarah Dupere & Achille Auclair in 1860, it is stated that her parents were Joseph Dupere and Therese Fournier. Page 38, Line 28, of the 1860 Maine Census of Aroostook County, Township 18, Range 7, Post Office-Fort Kent, taken on June 1, 1860 shows the following: Sarah Auclair (spelled O'Clair on census) age 28, born in Canada, wife of Achille (spelled Archer in census) Auclair age 21 (should be 24), Laborer, b. Canada, and son Joseph (no last name shown) age 4, b. New Brunswick. (Joseph was Sarah's son by Vital Theriault according to notation in Joseph's marriage record in 1887 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish, Skowhegan, Maine.) Page 361, Line 9, 1870 Census of Aroostook County, Van Buren Plantation, Maine, shows the following: Oclaire, Achille, 40, b. Canada, common laborer, cannot read or write. Sarah, 38, Keeping House, b. Canada; Joseph, 14, b. Maine; Peter, 9, b. Canada; John, 3, b. Canada; Mary, 7, b. Canada Page 3, Line 38 of the 1880 Maine Census of Aroostook County, Presque Isle, Maine, shows the following: Mary O'Clair, age 17, Keeping house, b. Canada Joseph O'Clair, age 23, Laborer, b. Canada (her husband) (Not Joseph Theriault Auclair) Page 3, Line 40 of the same 1880 census of Aroostook County, Presque Isle, Maine it shows: O'Clair, Sarah, age 48, keeping house, b. Canada son Joseph, age 24, working in Printing Office, b. Canada son John, age 14, b. Canada

  • ***My conclusion on the 1880 census is that the family probably was living in the same household as their names followed each other in the census. Also Achille is not mentioned so I assume he has died at this point. Also don't know what happened to Peter shown in the 1870 census. Sarah Auclair was a resident of West Derry, N.H. for seven months before her death in 1900. She is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry, N.H. Her place of residence prior to moving to West Derry was Milton Mills, N.H where she lived with her first born son Joseph Theriault Auclair. Her death record states she was born in Canada in 1835. Death record states cause of death as Stomach Cancer. Pierre (Peter) Auclair In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, there is a Pete O'clair, b. 1861 in New Brunswick, Canada, who could be the correct individual as he is 19 years of age at this point, and working as a farm hand in Marysville which is south of Van Buren, Maine, where records show he was born. Further searching of the census shows nothing on Pete O'clair. Mary Anaise Auclair Mary's baptismal record from St. Arsene, Canada, shows her to be the daughter of Achille Auclair, journalier, and Sara Dupere. Her Godparents are listed as Moyse Morin and Marie M. Pelletier. Page 361, Line 9, 1870 Census of Van Buren Plantation, Maine, shows the following: Oclaire, Achille, 40, b. Canada, common laborer, cannot read or write. Sarah, 38, Keeping House, b. Canada; Joseph, 14, b. Maine; Peter, 9, b. Canada; John, 3, b. Canada; Mary, 7, b. Canada Page 3, Line 38 of the 1880 Maine Census of Presque Isle, Maine, shows the following: Mary O'Clair, age 17, Keeping house, b. Canada Joseph O'Clair, age 23, Laborer, b. Canada (her husband) 1900 Federal Census of Winn, ME done on July 8, 1900 shows Mary with her second husband, Loren Jarvis, four O'Clair children, and two Jarvis children Lillian and Walter. 1910 Federal Census of Winn, ME shows Mary, Loren Jarvis, and two Jarvis children, Lillian and Walter. 1920 Census has Mary Jarvis living with her half-brother, Joseph Auclair, in Winthrop, Maine. She is age 55 at last birthday, b. Canada, father and mother shown born in Canada. Occupation: Housekeeper for private party. 1930 Federal Census of Winn, Me shows Mary, age 64, living on Winn Road with her husband, Loren. Joseph Jean Auclair John's birth record states his name as Joseph Jean Auclair. His baptismal from St. Epiphane, Canada shows him to be the son of Achille Auclair & Sara Dupere. His Godparents are listed as Theophile Chamberland, cultivateur, and Marie Tardif, his spouse. According to the 1900 Maine census, John, age 33, born Feb. 1867 in Canada and his wife, Lucy, age 25, born Canada, were living in Skowhegan, Maine. They had been married eight years and had four children, of which only two were living. John could not read or write, but could speak English. He worked in the mill as an oil cloth printer. Children: Mary b. March 1893 in Maine, age 7; Léda M. b. August 1895 in Maine, age 5; Alice b. May 1899 in Maine, age 1; Edward born March 1900 in Maine, age 2 months. (Since they state only two children were living and the next census doesn't show Mary or Edward then I would assume they were the deceased children). In the 1910 Maine census, John is shown as living in Winthrop, Maine, age 43, working in the oil cloth shop as a printer. Wife Lucy, age 34, occupation: none; Lena, age 14, born Maine, occupation Woolen Mill, could read and write; Alice, age 11, born Maine; Olivine, age 8, born Maine; Cecilia, age 5, born Maine. John's death record filed with the Town of Winthrop reads as follows: John Auclair died March 5, 1927, Winthrop. His parents are listed as Archie Auclair and Sara Dukre. (I'm assuming Archie is English for Achille, and that Sarah's last name is spelled incorrectly, ie: should be Dupere. Achille & Sara are listed as parents in his marriage record). The following information was obtained from the files of the Kennebec Journal which are on file in the Maine State Library, Augusta, Maine. John O'Clair (s/b Auclair) passed away at 12 o'clock Saturday at his home on Morton street following a short illness from pneumonia. He was 60 years of age. Mr. O'Clair is survived by a widow, Mrs. Lucie O'Clair, and five daughters. Rev. de Sister St. Francis Xavier of Mount Merici convent, Waterville, Mrs. Alice Fountain of Augusta, Mrs. Olivine Bruneau, and Misses Cecilia and Rita O'Clair, and one son Clement O'Clair, also a nephew, Alex Fournier, who lives with the family. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Jarvis of Winn, and one brother, Joseph O'Clair (s/b Auclair ) of this town (Winthrop). Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning from St. Francis church. Tuesday, March 10, 1927, obituary. Winthrop. Funeral of John O'Clair. Funeral services for the late John O'Clair were held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning from St. Francis church. Rev. R. J. Keenan, the rector, officiated. The bearers were Alec Fourner, Joseph Bruneau, Albert Fournier, John Fournier, Dulor Fountain and Edmund Auclair. The remains were placed in the tomb to await burial in the spring in Glenside cemetery. Out of town relatives present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gilblair, Thomas Dore and Rosie Pooler of Skowhegan, and John Fournier, and Mrs. Louis Cyr of Old Town. Card of thanks appeared also in Kennebec Journal: We wish to express our sincere thanks to all our friends and neighbors for the kindness to us during our recent bereavement and for the beautiful flowers. We wish especially to thank Rev. Fr. Keenan. Mrs. John O'Clair and Family. Mr. and Mrs. Dulor Fountain and Mrs. Joseph Bruneau. Buried in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop, Maine, plot 362. Relationship Notes for Joseph Jean Auclair and Lucy M. Fortin From the marriage record of John Auclair & Lucie Fortin at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church: "On the 16th of August 1892, after the ordinary publications, I married Johnnie O'Clair, major son of the deceased Achille O'Clair and Sara Duperre of Skowhegan, and Lucie Fortin, minor daughter of the deceased Thomas Fortin and Lucie Poulain, also of Skowhegan, in the presence of HerminegildeHalle and Anna Gilbert." Adolphe O. Lacroix, Priest Maine Marriage record shows their marriage as Lucy Foster & John O. Clair. (Error in both names).
