About Pierre Basil Rossouw

Pierre Basil Rossouw was the first person in South Africa to undergo a domino heart transplant performed on 09 December 1995 in Pretoria Heart Hospital. This means that he was the recipient of the heart of a living person. The other person received a donor heart and lungs. Pierre is one of three blood relatives that had heart transplants. His newphew, Hendry and his son, Basil also had heart transplants. Pierre passed away 4 months after his transplant at age 46. Basil passed away 25 months after his transplant at age 39. Hendry passed away at age 52. His son Hendry also suffered from miocardial infarction but due a piece of bone growing out of the back of his scull from a teenage head injury, he was not viable for a heart transplant. He passed away at the age of 36 on 05/11/2019 when his heart stopped and he had signed a DNR.
