He was 18, at the time there was 3,138 in the colony. He married in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada, on july 12, 1676, Marguerite Guillet- Lajeunesse. They had 7 girls and 5 boys. She died at 80 in 1704 in Sainte-Pazanne, Bretagne. That is where we are from....

First and only ancestor in the country of Deshaies families. Our ancestor was established in Canada about 1665. The following year a general census of the inhabitants of the colony took place. Thanks to this precious document, we know that our ancestor was first of all a servant of Marie Bouchard, a widow of Etienne Pepin de Lafond, residing at the Trois-Rivieres and a stone sister of Boucherville, governor of three rivers. In 1674, Pierre Deshaies settled on land at Batiscan. He then married Marguerite Guillet dit Lajeunesse, our elder moved in 1677 to Trois-Rivieres and had twelve children. But soon Pierre Deshaies ceded his land to Nicolas Perrot and went to settle in Becancour.

1. It is there that the census of 1681 finds it and this is what it says: "Pierre Deshayes 33 years old, Marguerite Guillet his wife 21, children: Marie-Catherine 3, Madeline 1 1/2, 1 cow, 8 arpents* worth"

  • (1. an old French unit of land area equivalent to 3,420 square meters (about 1 acre), the standard measure of land in those areas settled during the French regime and in use until the 1970s. 2. a unit of linear measure equivalent to about 190 feet (58 m), used in New France.)

Pierre Deshaies spent the rest of his life at Becancour. He was buried there on June 6, 1732, at the age of eighty-four. At his funeral, he was given the title of captain of the militia; He had served in the militia under the command of Dutort in 1726. The descendants of Pierre Deshaies multiplied throughout the province of Quebec, and even beyond, but chiefly in the regions of Becancour, Arthabaska, Megantic and Montreal. We do not know exactly which part of France, Pierre Deshaies was native but probably came from the region of Saintonge because his parents-in-law, Pierre Guillet and Jeanne Delaunay of St-Pere and their families were all from this region.
