Pierre de Villiers, then Pierre de Villiers of L'Isle-Adam, lord of Domont, son of Adam I of Villiers-le-Bel and Alix de Crécy, is the first of the Villiers to be lord of L'Isle-Adam de 1364 to 1386, the year of his death.

Knight of the Watch From 1348, he is knight of the Watch in Paris, then goes to Scotland before serving in Normandy. Member of the order of the Star, it is in 1352 alongside Guy II de Nesle, Marshal of France, in Brittany, during the battle of Mauron lost by the French knights against the English archers. As a prisoner, his ransom was paid by John II the Good, who appointed him captain of the strongholds of Pontorson and Mont-Saint-Michel. In the company of Arnoul d'Audrehem, Marshal of France, he is saved from an ambush by Bertrand Du Guesclin, fact that will be worth to this last his title of knight. Pierre de Villiers then takes him under his wing and provides him with troops. Before being recalled by the dauphin and regent Charles as knight of the Watch in Paris, he left Du Guesclin his post at Pontorson. In Paris, under the orders, notably, of Etienne Marcel, he fails to contain a band of looters at the gates of the capital. In 1357, however, he took the fortresses of Chartres and Étampes. In 1359-1360, he was entrusted with the guard of the city of Melun. He lost his wife, mother of his six children, Jeanne de Beauvais, lady of Massy, in 1363.

Grand Master of the King's Hotel

In 1364, on his return from England where he had accompanied King John, he acquired the lordship of L'Isle-Adam from his cousin Guillemette of L'Isle-Adam, a few years after buying it the lordship of Valmondois. The new king, Charles V, took him to his service and appointed him in 1368 grand master of the Hôtel du roi, a position he held until his death. Charged with several missions for which he gives satisfaction to the king, it does in 1375 bearer of the oriflamme. He lost two of his sons that same year and continued to perform various military missions for the king.

Remitted to Marguerite de Vendôme, who died in 1382, he had a chapel dedicated to the Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul in the castle of L'Isle-Adam in 1378. He was called upon to raise the banner before the War of Flanders by the new king Charles VI in 1382. The battle of Roosebeke proves to be a brilliant victory for the French army. As Jean Froissart indicates, the sky suddenly cleared as Pierre de Villiers lifted the oriflamme, the Flemings, suddenly dazzled, were massacred.

Death and succession

On this victory, Pierre de Villiers retired to his castle of L'Isle-Adam, made his will in 1383 and received in 1386 the King of France. He dies a few months later.

At his death, the estate of L'Isle-Adam fell to his son Pierre II de Villiers Isle-Adam, future chamberlain of King Charles VI. The titles of Pierre de Villiers at his death were: lord of Massy, Domont, Isle-Adam and Valmondois, Councilor and Chamberlain of the King, Lieutenant General for the King in Lower Normandy, Sovereign Master of the King's Hotel and Oriflamme Holder of France.

Pierre de Villiers is a distant ancestor of the writer Auguste de Villiers of L'Isle-Adam.
