Son of Pierre Thomas Chapeau Richards and Kate Louise Cornell, he married Hetta May Hervey, daughter of Eliphalet Williams Hervey and Emeline K. Homer, on June 5, 1902. Between them they had two children;

  After a preparatory schooling in England, where his family lived for several years, He attended the Dwight school in New York and entered Princeton University in September, 1891. Upon leaving Princeton, he studied chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and in 1896 was employed as a chemist by the New York & New Jersey Fire Proofing Company at Keyport, New Jersey. In 1897 he was associated with the Whitman Mill Corporation at New Bedford, Massachusetts, manufactures of cotton goods.

In 1905 Pierre removed to England where he was managing director of American Agencies Ltd. of London, manager of the Colgate department of cousin John Morgan Richards & Sons Ltd., and a director of Thompson & Norris Manufacturing Company.
During the first world war, he served as volunteer with the London Fire Brigade. In January, 1920, he was awarded a testimonial at Wandsworth Town Hall by the Royal Humane Society of England for saving a drowning boy in the river Thames at Putney.
About 1933 Pierre removed to Paris where, until the outbreak of the war, he acted as head purchasing agent for Europe of the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company. He left Paris on the last train before the German army entered the City.

  On his return to America he made his home in Short Hills, New Jersey.
