Private Ludik No. 589937 of the Witwatersrand Rifles/Regiment de la Rey (WR/DLR), S.A. Forces was killed in action during the attack on Mount Stanco, Italy. His grave is located in the CASTIGLIONE SOUTH AFRICAN CEMETERY. The WR/ DLR was given orders to take Monte Stanco and the attack commenced on 13 October 1944.
Mount Stanco is a peak in the medium-high Bolognese Apennines , located in the municipal area of Grizzana Morandi. The War Cemetery with the highest number of South African fallen on Italian soil is located in Castiglione dei Pepoli. Of the 502 soldiers buried in this cemetery, 401 are South Africans.
