Book
Spanbroek. Geboorteakten, 1840
- came to America at age 7 in 1847
- limited schooling but very fond of reading, esp religious/devotional
- worked in a local butcher shop (Vander Syde); liked it and got work at a slaughterhouse on 16th St in Chicago but after a few weeks developed typhoid pneumonia and had to give up this work
- following this, stayed on farm; drove oxen, raised hay/corn/grain/potatoes; surplus produce sold in Chicago
- in 1916, gave up his interest in the Paarlberg Farm (two of his sons continued to manage it); continued to care for cows/chickens/pony as long as his health allowed
Pietre Paarlberg married Cornelia Van Oostenbrugge and the couple built a farm house in 1870. Here they had 10 children. The house is now a museum in South Holland, Illinois. (Refer to the newspaper article - The Times - January 9, 1972)
Pietre Paarlberg's grandson was Secretary of Agriculture under President Eisenhower and a Professor at Purdue University. (Refer to "I Remember" by Ann DeCook Wahl)
