Pieter was likely born as Pieter Jansz Bontetas in the area around Valkenburg (Zuid-Holland) and Leiden, as his family appears in records in that area. He would have been born around 1590, as he already had five children in 1623. It is unlikely that this Pieter had any connection with Oegstgeest; that location was taken from grandchild Reynier's marriage.

Before 1619, his children were baptised in Katwijk aan den Rijn, as people in Valkenburg still went to that church [1]. His son Pieter was baptised on the 28th of August 1616[2].

Pieter Jansz Bontetas married to Nelletgen Pietersdr before April 4th 1619, as he is then mentioned as her husband in a notarial deed [3].

In 1623 we find that Pieter Jansz Bontetas lived in Valkenburg (Zuid-Holland), together with his wife Nelletgen Pietersdr, his sons Pieter and Wouter, and his daughters Haesgen, Anna and Maritgen [4].

When Pieter and his wife are mentioned to be both dead in 1656, we find that Pieter is called Quackenbosch [5]. Apparently, he started to use a different last name over the years. Probably he had something to do with a Quackenbosch (area where Black-crowned night herons (Kwak in Dutch) breed, and took that toponym.

This would imply that other people called Quackenbosch that lived before him are not necessarily related.
