FATAL ACCIDENT NO. 54 - Sept. 16 1908 – Peter Gandino Calumet Branch, Calumet & Hecla.
This accident, causing the death of Peter Gandino, occurred at the 49th level North side of No. 2 shaft , Calumet Branch, Calumet & Hecla.
The inquest over the body of deceased was held before Justice Fisher and the following witnesses were produced and their testimonies taken.
Peter Z. Sterk: “I work for the C.&H. Mining Co., at No. 2 shaft. I was working at the 49th level today. I knew the deceased, we were trammers working in the same gang. He was filling the car. He was picking the fine dirt when the loose came away. We tried the same piece that came away with a bar two or three times, but it would not come down. We had taken out two cars from that place and while we were filling the third car this rock came down. We tried to bar this piece down in the morning before we went into fill cars. The accident happened about 9 o' clock A. M."
Mili Meijlkovic: “I work in the same gang as Peter and the previous witness. I saw the accident and corroborate the testimony of the former witness."
Verdict: "That the said Peter Gandino came to his death on the 16th day of Sept., 1908, from injuries received by being struck with a rock rolling on him while working at the 49th level North side of No. 2 shaft, Calumet Branch of the Calumet & Hecla Mine."
