Notes
Presley Self of Alabama--by Larry Brown
The primary documentation on this Presley Self is contained in an application for Indian land in Oklahoma in 1906 by a grandson, George M. Dallas Hopper. He states that Presley married Amy (also called Annie) Gunter, daughter of the John Gunter who ran a ferry on the Tennessee River called Gunters Landing (the present site of Guntersville, Alabama). He also states that Amy had a brother also called John Gunter. Amy's grandmother was a full-blood Cherokee whose name is not given in the document. The document further states that Presley and Amy were married in Tennessee or [Cherokee] Old Nation when she was very young. {The marriage had occurred by 1784 and could have occurred as early as 1780. If this statement is true it may explain why we have never found a marriage for Presley and Amy. If it occurred in a town of the Cherokee Nation it probably was never recorded.
The document lists their children as follows: Dicie Self Taylor, Betsy Self Skelton, Frank Self, John Self, Mary Self [Hopper], Dan Self, Isaac Self, Jesse Self.
