About Priest John

Priest Ivan (John)

Natpis svećenika Ivana, Arheološki muzej Split, Salona, Salona, Marusinac, 599. - 603. g.

Note: Marcellinus was a his brother.

English

The tombstone of the priest John is composed of three tablets. At the beginning of the first row is a cross, and at the end of the last row is a header (ivy leaf). The inscription has great historical significance for several reasons. First of all, he mentions the priest John who was the guardian of the Basilica of St. Anastasia on Marusinac in Solin. Furthermore, he mentions Proconsul Marcellinus, probably as governor of Dalmatia; this Marcellin is, according to some, the nephew of the priest John, according to others his son, and according to others his brother. The third meaning of this inscription is that it is one of the latest Salonitan and Dalmatian metric inscriptions. Another interesting thing about this inscription is that don Frani Bulić served as a template for his tombstone inscription.

  • Translation: John, the sinner, lies there, a priest unworthy of it. For years, having fulfilled the fifth circle of his age in a row, the tomb that John gave, I ordered, was erected for himself; his own brother Marcelin, the proconsul, was present, and with him, together, were his many nephews. Having died by pure faith, he now gave the tomb an ornament; join now, as a guarantor, together with his wife, guarding the thresholds of the holy Anastasia to the children. The month of August, the thirteenth day in a row, for the indications of the second, is the time of the end of its age.
