First, to address Esriel ben Eisik – he is said to have died in (Iyar) 1716, both in Hock-Kaufmann (page 26) and in the Hock Notebooks. Kaufmann has chosen to file him under Bondi and, as you see, the notebook has him under Jontof. His epitaph describes him as quite illustrious, and I found him briefly mentioned in several works. He was apparently very influential and important, and I am only sorry that the epitaph contains several sets of dots. They may mean that Kaufmann didn’t want to use up too much space, or it may mean that portions were illegible. Here is how it reads, approximately: 1607 (grave number, presumably) then taf ayn vav (the year 576), Iyar (so 1716)- haRosh v’haKatsin (the head and princely man) r”h v’Primos (head of the community) c”h (honorable reb) Esriel ben hajashish (Esriel, son of the elderly – not necessarily still living, but one who lived to an old age) Eisik j”th (Eisik JomTov) chatano gaon mvplg (son-in-law extreme genius – oddly expressed, since it would usually say chatan hagaon, but this still must be what is meant)......bhastadlan gadolah (son of the great emissary)....bni bnaim gadolim v’rabonim (?son of sons great and rabbinic?)

Anyway, I am almost certain that it means his father in law was one of the major rabbis – perhaps one of the Spiras – but the meaning could be entirely different. In any case, he is the same person as the one on Geni, and the Treindel mentioned as his mother opens up some very interesting possibilities. She dies in childbirth in 1657 as the wife of Isaac Josef A”X (Altschul). Her father was an older Esriel Jontof, who is described as already deceased on her tombstone. The man who appears to be her husband lives to an old age and dies in 1670 and is buried in the next-numbered grave to hers. He is listed under Bondi, but some apparent descendants of theirs are listed under Altschul. This makes it look very likely that there was a line of Bondi/Jontofs who also went by Altschul.

Dear Randy, I would like to avoid missunderstanding. I am really very busy and have to do my working duties. I cannot be involved with the details of your research (as identity of orphans). To confirm your hypotheses would mean to carry out research in the archives with no garancy of sucess. I can give you some information which I have available in my computer. I can only confirm that the name of the Primas was Ezriel ben Eisik Yom Tov (= Bondy), he died 1716. His father was Eizik ben Josef Yom Tov (=Bondy), he died 11.kidlev 431 = at the end of 1670. Ezriel´ s wife was Chayle at Avner from Raudnitz., she died 23.12.1704. The Treindl (died 1657) and Serl (d. 1663) were daugters of another Esriel YT (in 1657 he was not alive). In this moment, I do not know the relations between the branches of the family, they are very complicated. You must try to find the father of your Joseph (father of Eisik and grand-father of Ezriel) by yourself, or wait till I have time. I must note that there was another (very rich) branch of Bondy family, see the link. Your Joseph is not an descendent of this branch either. Kind regards. Alexandr
