Biography

Priscilla Ann (Lawrence) Whitfield was born circa 1660 in Lawne Parish. Her parents were John Lawrence, of Lawne Creek Parish and Mary (Bnu) Lawrence.

Priscilla married Matthew Carrol Whitfield, II.

Priscilla married Matthew Nathan Whitfield, Jr. in 1703 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Together they had the following children:

  1. Thomas Whitfield;
  2. William Whitfield, I;
  3. Elizabeth Smith.

She died on April 23, 1739 in Indian Woods or Bennett Creek, Edenton, NC.



The Indian Woods reservation was located on the north side of the Roanoke River, between Quitsna Swamp and Deep Creek, in southwestern Bertie County, N.C. The northern band of the Tuscarora Nation moved onto the reservation in 1717, after struggling to stay neutral in the Tuscarora War of 1711-1713. In the war, English forces killed or enslaved roughly a quarter of the Tuscarora Nation, previously the leading political, military and trading power in eastern N.C.

Free Person of Color - Not direct to blue bloods, mom was native and the proof is that her dad was paying for a tithable in his household; which this particular line kept being tithable all the way down to 1762 in Granville Co, NC tax distric on free people of color, named Epping Forest Tax District which was an Eastern Siouan Cherokee War Service Muster of Col Eaton and this particular group were coordinating with the indian Territorial Gude family of Williams from the Nottoway Cheraw,; this line is tithable with a grandson on record as Chief of Tuscorora, which when you work backwards leads here to this profile; and said line continued to marry tithable and the were connected always to the St Tammany groups with pre-British land claims in what was New Spain. The Bernard family was tied to all things La Louisianne.
