About Priscilla Green

Priscilla Mclamore married James Green, January 5, 1795, Warren County, NC.

Will of Atkins McLemore, written Sept. 15, 1788, proved in Warren County, NC, at May Court, 1791. Atkin bequeathed to his daughter, Priscilla McLemore, three Negroes - Winny, Tom and Mingo. Also, one feather bed and furniture and one horse. Mrs. Sarah McLemore, executrix and William Christmas, executor. Nathaniel McLemore produced the will again at the May Court, 1808.

April, 1822, Spring term of court in Franklin County, NC. Jesse Person, Esq. petitioned the court for the emancipation of a Negro named "Mingo" aged 60 years or thereabouts, late the property of the late Captain William Green. The petition states that Mingo had performed many good and meritorious acts. And that many years before this Captain Green had determined to set Mingo free. But he was compelled for financial reasons to part with him. Mr. Person stated that "the said Mingo is a preacher of the Gospel of the Baptist persuasion and has at this time, and has had for a great many years a considerable church in the neighborhood of Louisburg to the entire satisfaction of all the owners of slaves who visit his meetings as well as others." Jesse Person stated that he had purchased Mingo at a sheriff's sale under the execution against Capt. Green with only a small part of the purchase money out of his pocket, the greater part having been paid to him by the members of the church to which he was attached, and by Mingo himself. He asked that the man "Mingo" be emancipated from the condition of bondage to that of "free person of color." In addition Jesse Person asked that henceforth Mingo be known by the name of Mingo Green. Jesse Person entered into the bond that was required by law. The petition was granted.
