Biography

Private Abijah Thompson served with Massachusetts Line during the American Revolution.
Abijah Thompson was born in Woburn, Massachusetts, on April 11, 1739, the son of Samuel Thompson and Ruth Wright.[1][2][3]

He married first, Esther Snow, also of Woburn, in Woburn on December 13, 1759. She died of "small-pox" on January 3, 1761, aged 21, leaving no children.[2][4][5]

He married second, at Woburn in 1762, Abigail Wyman, daughter of Zebediah and Abigail (Pierce) Wyman of Woburn. They had two children:[2][6]

Rhoda Thompson, born November 5, 1763; married, October 19, 1780, Jonathan Tidd.[2][7][8]
Abijah Thompson, born October 24, 1768; married 1st, July 1, 1790, Lydia Mead, of Bedford, Massachusetts, 2nd, March 10, 1809, Lydia Bradford, of Wilmington, Massachusetts.[2][9][10][11]
His second wife, Abigail, died in 1778. He married third, intention recorded July 16, 1779, at Woburn, the widow Mrs. Sarah (Stanley) Burtt, of Tewksbury, Massachusetts. She survived him eleven years, and died March 22, 1821, in her 67th year. Their children were:[2][12][13][14]

Charles Thompson, born October 25, 1780; married, January 19, 1802, Mary Wyman.[2][15]
Alpha Thompson, born June 11, 1785; married, January 4, 1810, Mary Scottow.[2][16]
Sally Thompson, born January 23, 1787; married, April 21, 1808, William Bond, of Wilmington, Massachusetts.[2][17][18]
Nancy Thompson, born 1788; died January 15, 1790, aged 2.[2][19]
Nancy Thompson, 2nd, born June 3, 1790; married, February 27, 1812. Christopher P. Hosmer, of Bedford, Massachusetts.[2][20][21]
He served with his older brother, Samuel, in the old French war in 1758. On the morning of the 19th of April, 1775, when notified that the British troops were on their way to Concord, he lost no time in putting both his military knowledge and his patriotism to the test. With his brothers, Samuel and Daniel, he hurried away to the scene of danger, and took an active part in the conflict in which Daniel was killed. He subsequently served in the Revolutionary army, for some time as armorer, but later as adjutant of militia. After the War he ran a hotel on what is now Elm St. in Woburn. He was also involved in the promotion of the "Baldwin Apple" (See also: Col. Loammi Baldwin), and for twenty or thirty years served as deputy sheriff, becoming known as "Sheriff Thompson" or "Sheriff Abijah."[2][22]

Sheriff Abijah Thompson died "by paralysis" in Woburn on January 16, 1811, at the age of 71.[2][23] He was buried at the Second Burial Ground in Woburn.
