About Private CSA William Dunbar Gross
Private William Dunbar Gross (1820-1897,) of the 6th Mississippi “The Bloody Sixth” Infantry. Captured at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862, spent the rest of the war at Rock Island Pow Camp Illinois. When the Civil Was was over, the Federals offered him a train ride back to his home in Carthage, Mississippi if he signed an oath of allegiance to the United States, or walk home If he didn’t sign.
He walked home.
