PROFESSOR DAVID FLUSSER, who has died in Jerusalem aged 83, was the author of the notable biography Jesus. An expert on early Christianity and Judaism of the Second Temple Period (538 BC to 70 AD), Flusser first published Jesus in 1968. Thirty years later, with Dr Steven Notley, he rewrote the book to incorporate the wealth of new data derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls, years of historical inquiry and recent archaeological discoveries
David Flusser was born in Vienna on September 15 1917 into an assimilated Jewish family. When he was six months old, the family moved to Prague, where David's father worked as an engineer.
Aged 18, David became a student of Latin and Greek at Prague University, and it was thanks to his knowledge of these languages that the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was able to obtain for him, from the British Mandate authorities in Palestine, a certificate to emigrate there.
He arrived in Palestine in 1939. He worked as a teacher, and studied at the Hebrew University's Religious Sciences department, where he was marked out as an outstanding scholar. In 1955, he received his doctorate and the next year began teaching in the university's Comparative Religions department, where he would remain.
