The only record for a Prudence Choate is from a DAR application for Revolutionary War soldier Christopher Choate (DAR #A021678), born Bedford County, Virginia 1750, lived in 96 District South Carolina for many years (and served from there), then moved to different locations in Tennessee, where he later died. The application says:

"Prudence Choate Wife of Isham Dykes born 1782 in Tenn,; died April 5, 1862 in Altamont, Tenn (Grundy Co.) and was buried at Philadelphia, Tenn. (Warren County). Her father was Christopher Choate and her mother was Prudence(?). "[1]

If she was mother of Prudence Choate Dykes (who was born in the 1780s), then she herself must have been born closer to 1755-1760 and therefore married to Christopher Choate IV not III.

Austin Choate heritage Posted 28 Apr 2016 by idabelle388
Austin Choate, during his growing years, found his family to be involved in the trading business with the Cherokee Indian, as well as other nations. Austin, himself, was half English and half Cherokee because of the marriage between Christopher Choate III and with the Prudence Staley, a Full Blooded Cherokee (records on file with Cherokee nation). At the time of his mother's marriage, Prudence dad, according to the records, was the Chief of the Cherokee tribe. The Choate's felt that their trading business would be enhanced by marrying within the Cherokee nation.

Austin's own daughter, Hannah Choate, born abt. 1789 from Buncombe County, North Carolina, was part Cherokee. Her mother, Elizabeth Pyburn, help raise her during those growing years. The marriage in 1774, between Austin & Elizabeth Pyburn, produced 9 children. Some were born in Virginia and others, including Hannah were born in Buncombe County, North Carolina. For some reason, Hannah's name on the majority of the "pedigree" trees was not listed. The reasons for this are quite explainable, the first reason is because of the marriage between John Bradford Jr and Hannah Choate. No one was able to correct the spelling of her last name (Schroate) and carry back the history of her birth.

The second reason for her tree not continuing was because of errors on the date of her birth and birth location.

The third reason was in regard to marriage date of John Bradford Jr and Hannah Choate, which must have taken place in 1808, because their first child was born in 1809. Also, John Bradford Jr must had been married before to unknown Bradford, because his first daughter is Mary Bradford, born 1799. Therefore, John Bradford Jr, first wife must had died at child birth. Which explains some of the errors in regard to John Bradford Jr and Hannah Choate's list of children. That's why, in regard to Hannah Choate, some family trees on Ancestry.com show her birth abt 1780 and others show abt. 1790. But the correct birth date for Hannah is abt. 1789. The reason for the birth not being 1790 is because of her brother, Thomas Choate, who was in born in 1790. Therefore, there is no way that Hannah could had been born in 1790. The final decision on this matter is because the Cenus of 1850, show John at 73 and Hannah at 60 in Yancey County, North Carolina, USA.

John Bradford Jr and Hannah Choate are our 5th generation great grandfather and grandmother who produced our 4th generation great grandfather, George Allen Bradford.

Disputed ancestry

Seen as born 08/12/1720 in Baltimore, but that must be a mixup with an earlier Choate wife.

Father seen as Thomas Staley.

Seen as daughter of Su-Gi Standing Turkey

RESEARCH WORK REQUIRED

Many cousins have suggested that Prudence Cherokee is the Prudence Moytoy Staley born abt 1729 in Tennessee and that she is the daughter of Kanagatucko Old Hop Moytoy (father) and Su-Gi Rainmaker (mother). There is extensive data on Kanagatucko on the internet.

This database has Christopher b.12 Aug 1720 in MD married to Prudence Stately and his son Christopher b. 1745 born VA married to Prudence Cherokee. These could be the same woman?I have found no data to support the assumption that these are their wives. I have used these names as place holders only because they pop up so often on the internet. The Choate boys were among the first hunters and settlers of TN and it is very likely that they married into the local native population.

The internet, which is so easy to use, has allowed many inconstancies and errors to propagate and become ?facts? in our early family histories. These relationships maybe one of these errors. Properly documented genealogical research is based on vital statistics, church records, court records, land records, ledgers, and other surviving records. I have not found records to suggest that either of these Prudences are associated with the Christophers. But then again I have not spent a great deal of time researching for the wives of these men. I have recently been trying to build up documentation to support the children I have listed for these men.

A previous version of this profile made two claims that need proof:

  • that her maiden name was Staley[citation needed]
  • that she had Native American (Shawnee?) origins, went by the name of “Standing Turkey,” and was daughter of Su-gi Moytoy and/or of Su-Gi Rainmaker Moytoy.
  • This appears to be based on a Don Greene’s Shawnee Heritage series published in the early 21st century, which has shown to be inaccurate, even fraudulent.[citation needed]
  • These claims have been replicated on the Internet, and even "supported" by such derivative "sources" as the Millennium File and the Family Data Collection-- both Ancestry.com "creations".[2][3]
