The county was formed January 29, 1844 and is named after U.S. Attorney General Felix Grundy (1777–1840).
Grundy County is known for its spectacular views, saltpeter mines. It was also known for arson starting in 1917 and continuing off and on until 1990. These fires and explosions destroyed many buildings.
