About Pte. George Woodward Hovell
George Woodward Hovell was the son of Charles Woodward Hovell and Mere Te Aorere Aperaniko Hovell (Te Waara). He served in the New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion during World War I. George was shot in the head at Gallipoli and evacuated to England. He died of his injuries at King George Hospital in Camberwell, London, and was buried in Nunhead Cemetery. George is remembered on the Rakairoa Marae Memorial in Kennedy Bay, unveiled 11 November 2015.
