About Pte. William McKinlay
William McKinlay was born at Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland on 27 August 1893, the son of John Aitchison McKinlay and Margaret McKinlay (Shankland). He was a farmer before serving with the Auckland Infantry Regiment during World War II. William was wounded during the Battle of Passchendaele [gunshot wound to the right knee). He died in Auckland Hospital on 11 November 1918 during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic (4 days).
DEATH. MCKINLAY. - On November 12, 1918, at the Hospital Annexe, Auckland, of influenza, Private William McKinlay, dearly beloved eldest son of J. and M. McKinlay, of Gate Pa, Tauranga; aged 25 years. - Interred at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland. "Thy will be done." Source: Bay of Plenty Times (15 November 1918, p. 2).
