From an Ancestry.com STORY: "Putnam McKnight was employed first as a teacher. In addition to having a good practical education, he was an extensive reader and contributed articles to the local newspapers. He also was a fluent and eloquent public speaker. He was a Democrat and elected to the offices of selectman and lister of the East Montpelier, VT. He took an active interest in all things that pertained to the welfare of the community. He was a consistent member of the Universalist church. On 1 Jan 1828 he married Margaret Holmes, born in 1803, daughter of William and Margaret (Comins) Holmes. Their children were: Sarah G, born 12 Aug 1829, married Christopher C. Brooks, died 30 Dec 1901; Clarissa A., born 1 Mar 1837, wife of P. J. Kent, M. D., of Worcester, MA (and/or William C Vincent?); and Edwin Putnam McKnight, who married Mary L. Cole of Rome, NY. Putnam died 7 Jun 1883, and Margaret died 20 Mar 1894."
