Andrew Exum served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 15 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 in Cairo, IL. He was discharged on account of wounds on May 21, 1862 before Corinth, Mississippi.

He re-enlisted in the Union Army on 16 Feb 1865 at Camp Butler, IL, this time in Company G, 152nd Illinois Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on 11 Sep 1865 in Memphis, TN.
