Austin Honeycutt was the youngest child of John Honeycutt and Jane Bradford, born about 1835 in Egypt Twp., Yancey Co., NC. His father, John Honeycutt was killed sometime before 1839 leaving Austin, his mother and 3 minor siblings, Naomi, Noah, John alone. They were noted in the 1840 Yancey Co, NC Census with 5 people in the HH as follows: "Jane HONEYCUTT [30-40]" head, 2 males [5-10]; 1 male [10-15]; 1 female [10-15] and living next door to Pittman Williams. (Note: John and Jane Honeycutt Estate was located near this cemetery).

She was the Administratrix of her Husband's Estate and during the June Term 1840, Jane entered a Bond of $400 to settle the estate. The court ordered to lay off her one year's allowance totaling $100 which included crops and livestock. On February 11, 1842, “William Bradford” (Austin's uncle; Jane's brother) was appointed legal guardianship of the 4 orphaned children of John Honeycutt and ordered William Bradford to take care of and improve the Estate belonging to them and settle his guardianship and accounts with the Yancey Co. Court until they become of lawful age. Signed by William Bradford, John Bradford, John Hensley and William Wilson. There was no mention of Jane in the document.

During the 1850 Yancey Co., Census, Austin (age15) and Jane (age 40) were living with William Bradford (34) in HH #343. Next door HH #342 was Austin's sister Naomi who married Howell Briggs; In HH #340 was Austin's aunt and uncle Edmund Edwards and Elizabeth (William and Jane Bradford-Honeycutt's sister).

Austin married Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilson about 1854. I could not find a marriage certificate for them and the marriage year is based on the birth year of their first child Mary Jane. The family was noted in the 1860 Yancey Co. Census, Egypt Twp. HH #824 as follows: Austin age 25, Elizabeth age 26, Mary J. age 5, Thomas age 4, Emily C. age 1. Living next door was Lazarus Phillips family on one side and Oma Williams on the other. A few doors down in HH 820, were Elizabeth's parents, Thomas Wilson age 51 and Mary Ann (Hensley) age 50. Austin's mother died sometime before 1860 as she was gone during that census.

The Civil War erupted and on July 26, 1861, Austin Honeycutt, age 27, volunteered for 1 year as Private for Unit #139, Co. G, 29th Infantry Reg., NC. He was recruited by M. Chandler at Day Brook. The military documents described him as 5'-9", blue eyes, fair complexion, light hair, and a farmer. His older brother, Noah, served in the same time along with Charles M. Honeycutt [s/o Vincent Honeycutt and May] and Ansel Honeycutt.

Austin died on 15 August 1862, while on furlough at his home from "Dropsy", an old term used for the swelling of soft tissue/organs due to the accumulation of excess water. In modern terms Austin most likely died from edema due to congestive heart failure. After his death, the CSA owed back pay for his service. The initial amount was $208.61 however Elizabeth retained an attorney, B.M. Edney of Hendersonville, NC and after several years of legal wrangling, the Confederate States approved payment on November 11, 1864 to her attorney in the amount of $231.20. It is unclear if she actually received any money as the CSA was becoming bankrupted towards the end of the War.

Widowed Elizabeth ("Betsy") is taking care of 3 children on her own and about 1866 after the war, she married William "Billy" Bradford. I could not find a marriage record for them but this date is based on the birth of their first child Andrew.

Austin Honeycutt and Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilson had 3 children:

1. Mary Jane Honeycutt: b. February 1855 - d. Feb. 19, 1915; Married. Mr. Peek
2. Thomas J. Honeycutt: b. January 26, 1856 - d. May 28, 1927. Md. 1st. Melissa Hensley; 2nd Analize Randolph
3. Emily Cora Honeycutt: b. 1858 - d. ? ; married Rev. Samuel Wilson (s/o William Wilson and Susannah Bradford)
