MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 5 Barton Dyson Smith's tombstone in the Friendship Primitive Baptist Cemetery gives his birthdate as 1816. This is obviously an error since the marriage of his parents in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina is well documented. Census records indicate that he was born in 1821. Elizabeth Hogan Smith is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery in Carroll County, Georgia along with several of her children. Bad weather and bad roads are cited as the reason for her burial there instead of beside her husband. She is the daughter of James Hogan. Barton Dyson and Elizabeth Hogan Smith lived for many years in Coweta County, Georgia near Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church and accumulated some 1250 acres of land. In the late 1870s they disposed of their property and moved to Douglas County, Georgia, near the Paulding County line, where Barton Dyson operated a mill. The story goes that he died suddenly in 1882 while in Villa Rica, Carroll County, Georgia.
There is a story that Elizabeth Hogan Smith remarked in her later years that she nursed seventeen children and a mule colt. The colt story is confirmed in all branches of the family. However, only fourteen children were found by diligent search of records. The other three are assumed to have died as infants or as very young children and to have missed the census records. Civil War records list Barton Dyson Smith as serving as a private in Co K 30th Regiment, Chattahoochee Volunteers, Georgia Infantry, from Campbell County, Georgia, from Aug 19 1861 to Aug 21 1862, discharged by Civil Authority at Camp Hardee, Savannah, Georgia. Records also reveal he served with the Coweta Battalion, Georgia Militia, while serving as a Justice of the Peace.
