MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 2 George Washington Smith was born in Coweta County, one of 17 children of Barton Dyson Smith and Elizabeth Hogan Smith. George grew up during hard times in the south during the Civil War period and post-war reconstruction. George's father served during the war but survived, making a living for the family as a farmer and carpenter over the years.

After the 1870 census, Barton sold the family holdings in Coweta county and moved the family to Douglas County, Georgia, near the Paulding county line and also near the town of Villa Rica in Carroll County.

George married at age 23 to Lilla Ann Humphries and the young farmer and family moved to Carroll County where they resided in 1880. By the 1900 census, the family had moved to Paulding County, where George continued to farm as reported in 1910 and 1920 census records.

George must have been a hard-working man who loved his family. He supported 8 children by the sweat of his labors and even sent one to medical school (George W Jr.). All 8 grew up to be hard-working, dutiful citizens, a testament to the example of their parents.

According to his death certificate, George fell ill with nephritis and become paralyzed prior to his death in 1922.
