About Pvt. Casius Marion "Cash" Clayton
Cash M. Clayton served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War as a Private in Company C, 50th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. He enlisted on September 13, 1861 at Montgomery, Alabama for a period of 12 months. He was captured by the Union on February 16, 1862 at the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee. He was sent to Camp Douglas Military Prison in Chicago, Illinois, but was exchanged sometime in September 1862.
Cash Clayton was captured a second time on December 5, 1862 at Water Valley, Mississippi during the Confederate Army's retreat after their loss at the Battle of Corinth and was once again sent to a Prisoner of War camp in Illinois, this time to the Military Prison in Alton, Illinois. He arrived in Alton on January 10, 1863 and died there a month later of variola (smallpox) on February 19, 1863. He was buried in the Confederate Cemetery on North Alton, Illinois.
