Rebecca Ellen Rutherford married Chandler Hawkenbery, son of Jesse Hawkenbery and Melinda Smith, on 29 January 1862 at John Hall's home.

In December 1863 Chandler enlisted in the Union Army, and by August 1864 he was dead. Rebecca Ellen Hawkenbery later married Edgar W. Shurtleff,
