Charles Reeder Perdue was born near Redwood, Franklin County, VA about 1820 to Isaiah Perdue and Mildred (Wingo) Perdue. He married Luvenia F Ward in Franklin County VA 20 Oct 1846. The family had moved to Wayne County VA by 1860. The 1860 Census of Wayne County VA listed Charles R, age 40; Luvenia F, age 29; Martha A, age 12; Mary J, age 10; Wm. A, age 8; Stephen D, age 6; Charles, age 3; Henry D, age 1; and Martha Ward, age 45.

The 1870 Census of Wayne County WV list James A Decker, age 33; Martha A Decker, age 22 with 3 children: Ida L, age 5; Hattie B, age 3 and Eva V, age 10/12. Also living in the household was William Perdue, age 18; Charles, age 14; Henry D, age 11 and George P, age 6.

Luvenia had died by 1868.

Charles Perdue joined 10 August 1861 the 5th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Company A (Union) headquartered at Ceredo, Wayne Co., WV. On 31 Dec 1863, he was mustered out of Company A and into Company B for a period of three years as a Veteran Volunteer with the 5th WV Volunteer Infantry. He was described as being 5' 9 & 1/2", fair complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair and by occupation a farmer. In a statement made by his Captain regarding his death...."having served honestly and faithfully with his company in his regiment died in the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis, MD 13 Sept 1864." Hospital records of death and internment list the cause of death as "resection of right humerous upper third" (Surgical removal of the upper third of the right arm). Charles was buried 14 Sept 1864 at Ash Grove U.S. Cemetery (now known as Annapolis National Cemetery).

He died from gunshot wounds received at the Battle of Berryville on September 3, 1864.
