James A. Gladson served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on August 15, 1861 and mustered in on September 18, 1861 in Cairo, Illinois. He was 33 years old and 6 foot 3 inches tall. He had auburn hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.

On April 28, 1853 in Perry County, Illinois, James Gladson married Nancy Higgins and their first child, James Marion Gladson, was born in 1854. Following his stint in the Union Army during the American Civil War, James Gladson lived the rest of his life in Pinckneyville, Illinois where he worked as a farmer. He never learned to read or write.
