About Pvt. Jean Moritz (Mauritz) Litonius, U.S.V.

  • Jean served as private in Company E, 34th Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The Veterans Administration index card noted that he was born on 16 July 1878; enlisted for service on 22 July 1899; and was discharged from service on 12 February 1902. The card also noted that he died on 20 January 1960. See "United States, Veterans Administration Master Index, 1917-1940," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7T8G-B8ZM : 23 October 2019), Jean Litonius, 12 Feb 1901; citing Military Service, NARA microfilm publication 76193916 (St. Louis: National Archives and Records Administration, 1985), various roll numbers.
    • Jean performed his military service in Laoag City, Illocos Norte Province, Luzon Island, the Philippines. He was there during the United States occupation of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. (Because he was in the Philippines when the Twelfth Census of the United States was taken, his information was recorded in "Schedule No. 1 -- Population, Military and Naval Population.") It was noted that, in the United States, Jean had resided in Alpha, Wisconsin; was white, male, and born in July 1878; was 21 years old and single; was born in Sweden to parents who were born in Sweden; had emigrated to the United States in 1883; had resided in the U.S. for 16 years; and was a naturalized United States citizen. See "United States Census, 1900," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M31X-SLJ : accessed 20 December 2020), Jean Litonius, Laong Province Ilocos Norte Luzon Detach Military Hosp Corp US Army Infantry, Philippines; citing enumeration district (ED) 187, sheet B, family , NARA microfilm publication T623 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1972.); FHL microfilm 1,241,841.
  • Per the 1910 United States census of ED 181, Ward 10 of Seattle, King County, Washington (enumerated on 21 April 1910), the following people resided in the Litonius household (see "United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MGJH-VJ3 : accessed 20 December 2020), Jean N Litonius, Seattle Ward 10, King, Washington, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 181, sheet 11B, family 263, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1982), roll 1661; FHL microfilm 1,375,674.):
    • Litonius, Jean, head, male, white, age 31, married, married for three years, born in Sweden to parents who were born in Sweden, emigrated to the United States in 1891, a naturalized United States citizen, and employed as the proprietor of an employment office.

    • Litonius, Marian, daughter, female, white, age 1, born in Washington to parents who were born in Sweden.
  • Jean either had some lapses of memory, or confused the dates of when & where he first arrived in the United States. The information that he provided in the 1920 United States census, in his 1923 "Declaration of Intention" for naturalization, and in his 1925 "Petition for Naturalization" vary slightly. The most glaring discrepancy was why he declared, in 1920, that he had become a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1898, yet he submitted paperwork, in 1923 and 1925, to become a naturalized citizen. See below, in chronological order.
  • Per the 1920 United States census for ED 88, Seattle, King County, Washington (enumerated on 9 January 1920), the following people resided in the Litonius household (see "United States Census, 1920," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHN2-DBL : accessed 19 December 2020), Marian Litonius in household of Jean Litonius, King, Washington, United States; citing ED 88, sheet 8B, line 80, family 205, NARA microfilm publication T625 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1992), roll 1925; FHL microfilm 1,821,925.):
