Biography

Jeremiah Woodmansee was born on 27 December 1788 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, to Gideon and Aimie (Carter) Woodmansee. He married on August 21 1821, to Hanna Sawdey, daughter of Joseph Sawdey/Soddy Sr. She was born 15 July 1804 in Gaines, Genesee (now Orleans) County, New York. Jeremiah was in the War of 1812 as a private in Captain John Little's Company, Battalion of Rifles, commanded by major Forsyth, from about 1 February 1813 at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York, and honorably discharged on 1 February 1814 at French Mills, New York.

The names of the communities: French Mills and French Mills Falls have both been changed respectively to Fort Covington, Franklin County and Deer River, Lewis County, New York. Jeremiah's French Mills was probably Fort Covington, Franklin County, New York. Jeremiah is listed as receiving an appointment to ensign in 1820 from the State of New York. They were counted in the U.S. Census of 1830 in Gaines, Orleans County, New York. Gaines 4 Corners, as it was once known, was located two miles north of the Erie Canal. Jeremiah's property was deeded on 1 December 1835, so we can assume that they left New York near this time, moving west.

Their first seven children were born in Gaines, Orleans County, New York; the next four were born in Ohio. In the 1840 census the family was enumerated at Huron County, Ohio, and they arrived at Calhoun County, Michigan, between February 1844 and March 1847. Jeremiah died on 14 November 1856 at Lee Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, and is buried at Lee Center Cemetery. Hannah declared for a widow's pension on 23 May 1857, and at the census of 1860 she was living with her son, Henry William. She died on 10 December 1880 in Lee Township, Calhoun County, Michigan
