Joel was the son of George Fairbanks IV and Jerusha Twitchell of Medway, Mass. He was married about 1771 to Mary GALE, the daughter of Abijah Gale and Mary Gregory of Oxford, Mass.

Joel was a Rev. War soldier, and may be the one of his name who served from Wrentham as a private in Capt John Boyd's company of Minute-men in Col Greaton's regiment that marched on the alarm of 19 April 1775 with 8 days service. He was a private in Capt Amos Ellis' company, Col Benjamin Hawe's regiment, enlisting on 25 Sep 1777 until 31 Oct 1777, 1 month 7 days, at Little Compton, RI. Later he was a private from Medway in Capt John Gay's company, Col Ebenezer Francis' regiment and also in Capt Jacob Haskins' company, Col John Jacob's regiment, enlisting 2 July 1778 for 6 months 1 day.

Joel and Mary had six children, born 1772-1781, several of whose births are recorded in the Medway vital record.
