About Pvt John Peter Corn

Continental Army Private
John Peter Corn (1752-1843)
and
Hannah Elizabeth Parr Corn (1764-1853)

John Peter Corn was born on March 15, 1752, in Albemarle County, Virginia. In 1775, Virginia and the rest of the colonies were in turmoil; believing that all colonists should be free and equal was instilled by preceding generations who had fought for their own very existence. Thus, when taxes and no representation in England's government were levied against the colonies' people, it would become too much for them to accept. It was inevitable that John Peter Corn, his brothers (George, Samuel, and Jesse), neighbors, and friends would have supported the Declaration of Independence, signed on August 2, 1776, even though mother country England would still be considered their homeland. They were independent and not to be ignored or overburdened with unjust laws.

Records show John Peter Corn join the forces of none other than General George Washington. He enlisted on February 8, 1776, serving in Captain John "Jack" Jouett's Company, in Colonel William Dangerfield's 7th Virginia Regiment under Commanding Officer Alexander McClanchen. The 7th Virginia Regiment is the same regiment that his brother, Jesse Corn, was enlisted. We know John Peter fought through the terrible winter of 1777 and 1778 at Valley Forge and participated in the Battle of Brandy Wine Creek and the Battle of Germantown, which unfortunately were both British victories. We also know he survived the horrible cold and the almost starvation conditions that were everywhere. How pitiful the number of troops, how desperate the need, and how grateful we all must be for John Peter Corn and his brothers for doing what they could. In a time of need for their country, they gave the most valuable present they had, which was themselves. John Peter Corn was discharged from the Continental Army by Brigadier General William Woodford on February 7, 1778. The end of the Revolutionary War would not occur until September 3, 1783, with the Treaty of Paris signing.

In Henderson County, North Carolina, today are rich apple orchards. Still, in 1777 and 1778, the orchards of Virginia were already standing tall, and the season to harvest was almost at hand, and we can imagine young John Peter saying to himself, why not do a little gathering of the apple crops to help with the shortage of food. Little did John Peter know that he would eventually harvest more than apples as he would meet his future wife, Hannah Elizabeth Parr.

The heritage of John Peter Corn, soldier of the Revolutionary War and progenitor of most every family named Corn in Western North Carolina and most of the adjoining states, is that he and his wife Hannah Elizabeth Parr Corn are second generation into the Americas.

Even before John Peter Corn and Hannah Elizabeth Parr entered the state of matrimony in May of 1782, they could see that crowded conditions along the Tidewater land would make it more expensive once the war ended. There would be hundreds of young soldiers wanting a place of their own to begin a new life; they were of age and had fought for this country, and they would want their part of it as well.

After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, the United States gained most of the area south of Canada and east of the Mississippi River, except for Florida. The newly wedded couple already having one child, Adam born in 1783, knew they would need a home for the big family they aspired to have. They did live in Virginia for several years, but the urge to find their place in this newly expanding country was perhaps in the back of their minds. Maybe the lure and talk about new lands were absorbed by this young couple listening to the men who helped force the British to retreat to the peninsula of Yorktown. Maybe it was some of the men who had traversed the eastern part of North Carolina chasing King George III's soldiers back to the Atlantic Ocean to return home. They also could have talked with the over-mountain men of Kings Mountain fame that knew firsthand the land in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee was genuinely breathtaking. Around 1794, the couple with either six or seven children set out with others who believed America's new and exciting land was a great challenge with expanding borders and its endless surprises of wealth just for the finding.

Following Indian Trails Southward through Virginia's mountains, they were now taking that extra step and going the extra mile to find their new home. They wandered on until they entered of veritable green space in the valley of a river, with the hills above the valley displaying various shades of green. Knowing that their ancestors left the other oasis across the ocean to find a new place, perhaps the young couple arriving in this land was directed by faith to find a similar land of contour and beauty, but this land was virginal.

This newfound river where the young couple finally settled, they called Green River, and by this name, it still is known today. In the Green River Valley, the couple would raise a total of 15 children, and those children and their descendants would eventually disperse across the United States of America. John Peter Corn would die on October 14, 1843, and Hannah Corn would die on March 16, 1853, both in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and buried at the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery located there.

The children of John Peter and Hannah Elizabeth Parr Corn are as follows: Adam Corn, William Corn, Samuel Arthur Corn, John Adam Corn, Sarah Corn Capps, Peter Corn, Arthur Corn, Jesse Corn, Elizabeth Parr Corn, Marian (Mary Ann) Corn -died at two years of age, Noah Parr Corn, Silas Peter Corn, Mathew Dewitt Corn, Mary Ann Corn Capps, and Adah (Addie) Corn.

Aug. 4, 1800 US Census --- This 2nd census of the U.S. was ordered to begin on 8/4/1800, and it is the first of many we will refer to as we move through the Stories of our Corn family. The Census states:

"Peter Corn [head of household]
3 males under 10; [Jesse, age 4; Arthur, age 6; Peter, age 8]
3 males 10-15; [John, age 11; Samuel, age 13; William, age 15]
1 male 16-25; [Adam, age 17]
1 male 45 and over; [listed as Peter, age 49]
3 females under 10; [Miriam infant; Elizabeth, age 2; Sarah, age 9]
1 female 29-44; [Elizabeth (Parr) Corn, age 36]"

As we can see from the above census, another girl had been born into the family. Miriam Corn was born May 7, 1800. She was followed by 3 more children who were born while the family lived in Wilkes Co.; Noah Parr on Jan. 25, 1802, Silas on Sept. 17, 1803, and Mathew D. on Oct. 5, 1805. Miriam was the only child who did not live beyond infancy. She died Feb. 14, 1802. A forgotten little grave for two-year old Miriam is somewhere in Wilkes Co., NC."
