About Pvt. John Sylvestor Heffner, (USA)

GOOD MAN IS CALLED HOME
John Heffner, War Veteran and Founder of Local Church Passes Away.
LIFE FULL OF INTEREST.
After four years of suffering during the greatert part of which time he was confined to his bed, John Heffner, age 80, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.W. Lee, on South Anderson street shortly after eight o'clock this morning. Throughout the years he lay an invalid, he was constantly cared for by the brave wife who survives him but who in herself now seriously ill, and by the daughter with whom he made his home.
Married More Than Half Century.
The deceased was born in Reading, Pa, April 2, 1831. His parents died almost in his infancy and at the age of 5, he went to the home of his grand parents where he lived until he became of age when he went to Tourbotville, Pa., where he met Miss Mary E. Watts. To her he was married on Thanksgiving day, 1860, and during the 51 years of married life a more devoted couple could not have been found. In 1851, Mr. Heffner affiliated himself with the Presbyterian church and remained a devoted member of that faith until his death.
When at the beginning of the Civil War the call first came for men to go to the front, Mr. Heffner responded and throughout the long years of strife he remained in the service, being in many of the fiercest battles on the Rebellion.
Lived Here For Years.
With his wife and family he came to Elwood October 20, 1877 this being then but a community of a few houses in wilderness. In later years he was one of the leading contractors of the city and one of the best known local business men. He continued at this profession until failing health caused his retirement.
One of Church Founders
When the Presbyterian church was organized here in 1880, he was elected one of the trustees and he continued to hold this position until his death. He was also the treasurer of the church from that date until 1897 when he resigned because of his health.
On May 10, 1907, he was stricken with appolexy and never recovered from the stroke. Four months later seeming to realize his condition, he gave a complete sketch of his interesting life which was written at his request by his daughter, Mrs. Lee. He had a wonderful memory and this sketch is full of interest.

Mr. Heffner was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a member of Company D, 202nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 18 2023, 4:35:35 UTC
