Pvt John Holmes, Sr

Operated saw and grist mill at Forked River from about 1759. Lived at Upper Mill. Home attacked by Bacon's Tories in 1779. Holmes escaped but became ill from exposure and died shortly thereafter.

Some sources place his birth as "Freehold," however in 1726 Freehold Township covered quite a lot more territory than at present. Present day Holmdel Township is more accurate, despite its not being so named until 1857.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: May 18 2022, 16:59:43 UTC
