He enlisted January 1, 1780 through December 31, 1780 as a Private in Capt. James Fisher's Company, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia. John and Mary were married on September 18, 1792 in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. They had 12 children: Rosannah, Thomas, James, Sara, Robert T., Margaret, John, Anna, Rev. William, Elihu, Mary and Eliza McMichael.
