About Pvt. Michael Assad Zataney
Michael Assad Zataney was a Syrian immigrant who moved to Alabama. He was first a baker and then an optometrist, practicing in Alabama in 1916 and 1917. He attended the Illinois College of Optometry. He enlisted in the US Army on 25 May 1918 and was placed in Company I, 321st Infantry of the 81st Division. He was under the command of Lieutenant H. H. Crawford. He was wounded on the morning of November 11, 1918 while helping wipe out a machine gun nest to the East of Grimacourt and died the same day. He had been with the snipers on special duty and was shot through his left lung by a machine gun bullet and died on the way to the hospital.
