Robert L. Ramsey served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He entered service on 22 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 at Cairo, IL. He was killed at the Battle of Fort Donelson on February 15, 1862 in Stewart Co, TN.

The Widow's Pension application filed by his mother says that he was killed by a "gunshot wound received from the rebels, while engaged in storming the rebel works at (Fort Donelson)."
