About Pvt. Samuel Mellison, Sr. (USA)

SAMUEL MELLISON, post trader, Fort Hays, first came to Kansas in 1871, and located near Saline River, Ellis County, on a farm where he engaged in stock-raising and farming until 1878. He then came to Hays City, where he engaged in the restaurant business two years, when he was appointed sutler at Fort Hays. Born in Prospect, Butler Co., Pa., in 1849. Moved with parents to Bad Ax County, Wis., in 1854, where he lived until August, 1862, and enlisted in First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery (Civil War), Battery C. Participated in all the battles of his command. Mustered out in the fall of 1865. He then went to Minnesota and Dakota and remained until 1871.
He is a member of Vance Post No. 2, G. A. R. Married in 1879 to Miss Bessie Normoyle (she died in 1926), a native of the State of New York. They had two children--Anna May and Nellie Elizabeth (he eventually had a total of six daughters and three sons.
He died on March 24 1927 in Everett WA. Capt. Mellison was 78 years old, a retired member of the Everett Police dept. and for 27 years a resident of Everett WA. A veteran of the Civil War (joined up at age 14 as a drummer boy), frontiersman, indian scout, and a leading pioneer of Snohomish County. A close and personal friend of William Cody a.k.a Buffalo Bill and George Custer. Samuel had first hand information of Custer's last stand.
His relatives have Civil War letters he wrote along with his Civil War muster role. They also have picture of him on a white horse riding in a parade in Everett WA. Samuel was a trail blazer, frontiersman and a leading pioneer.
