Reuben Seay (son of James Seay, Jr. and Lucy Lewis) was born 1758 in Amelia County, Virginia, died March 19, 1833 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He married Miss Mary Ann Jones in/on 1780 in Amelia County, Virginia.

Reuben Seay: Rueben Seay Sr. was an artillery private with the Virginia State Line during the Revolutionary War. He was wounded at the Battle of Yorktown, Virginia.

In an affidavit duly sworn on Dec. 29, 1845, states "Rueben Seay was at the seige of Little York (Yorktown) and was in an entrenchment when the walls blew out, injuring Rueben Seay's eyes sorely. His eyes grew worse until within a few years he lost sight completely, and remained blind until his death.

Mathew Seay made an affidavit, dated November 20, 1947 stating his father came to Spartanburg County from Amelia County, Virginia in the year 1805. Also swears to the date of the death of his father, he giving as reasons for remembering the date as being a few days before he and Prestley Ballenger commenced a mill dam. In a statement sworn before open court in Spartanburg states he was 56 years of age in 1846, and that three children older than Mathew, and seven younger, that survived the father Reuben Seay.

Listed in the Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications, pg. 498 as follows: Mathew Seay from Virginia Application No. S7477; BLWT 26247-160-55. In one of the documents Mathew completes for his father, Reuben Seay, he states his siblinges are: Hezekiah Seay, Mary Bishop, Martha Brannon, Samuel Seay, Sarah Taylor, Juda Seay, Judith Brannon, James Seay, Elizabeth Dempsey, Lucy Blackwell and Reuben Seay, Jr. He stated that all the above lived in Spartanburg, South Carolina except Hezekiah Seay and Reuben Seay, Jr. who both lived in Tennessee and Lucy Blackwell and Sarah Taylor who both lived in Georgia. This is dated 7 Oct 1846. Also, one of these documents Mathew states he is 56 on the date of the statement which was 1846, thereby, 1790 is his birthdate.

Authorized 11 January 1776 in the Virginia State Troops as the Virginia State Artillery Company.

Organized in spring of 1776 at Williamsburg, Virginia.

Consolidated and redesignated 26 November 1776 as a company in Harrison's Continental Artillery Regiment.

1st Continental Artillery Regiment (aka Harrison's Continental Artillery Regiment):

Authorized 26 November 1776 in the Continental Army as Harrison's Continental Artillery Regiment and assigned to the Southern Department.

Organized in spring and summer 1777 at Williamsburg, Virginia to consist of 10 companies, including the Virginia State Artillery Company and the Virginia Continental Artillery Company .

Relieved 13 March 1778 from the Southern Department and assigned to the Main Army.

Redesignated 10 August 1779 as the 1st Continental Artillery Regiment.

Relieved 17 April 1780 from the Main Army and assigned to the Southern Department.

Reorganized 9 May 1780 to consist of 12 companies, including the Maryland Contiental Artillery Companies.

He was struck by cannonball at siege of Little York, Pigeon Hill, Va. In 1780 he married Mary Ann Jones who lived from 1765 until 1815. His headstone was erected by Mary Nancy Mills, and Joseph Gatney.

Fought in the Revolutionary War. See Rev. Pen #9359--Pvt. Artillery, VA Line, page 48. He is documented as being in the Siege of Little York where in the trenches his eyes were damaged, growing worst in later years to where he lost his sight. General Services Administration, National Archives & Records, Service, Washington, DC. He was wounded at Yorktown and has a VA Memorial marker at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, Spartanburg County, SC. His July 1846 will names his children.
