He married Catharine Starr January 1843 and fathered Sarah (b. @1841), Andrew Jackson (12/13/43), Ellen C. (b. 05/11/45), Mary L. (b. 06/05/49), William H. (b. 02/16/52), and Catherine (b. 07/06/57). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, he was hospitalized and discharged the service by surgeon's certificate April 1, 1863, but for "chronic diarrhea" of some two months duration, not the gunshot wound. His son Andrew served in the same company.
He died from the dysentery he brought home from the army.
