About Rabbi Abraham Zak II, ABD Bar

Rabbi Abraham Zak was the son of R' Meir Zak ABD of Lvov. He was named for his grandfather R' Avraham ABD Ostrog. He was son-in-law of Megale Amukos. He died young and his younger brother was named after him.

To clarify, R' Meir Zak had TWO children named Avraham. The first one was R' Avraham ABD Bar (husband of Chava Shapiro, father of Rosa). When R' Avraham died prematurely in 1644, R' Meir named his ben zekunim after him. This was R' Avraham HaKatzin (father of Meir, Shmuel, Yaakov Bunim).

He was a direct descendant of Asher ben Jehiel (1250 or 1259 – 1327), an eminent rabbi and Talmudist best known for his abstract of Talmudic law. He is often referred to as Rabbenu Asher, “our Rabbi Asher” or by the Hebrew acronym for this title, the ROSH (Hebrew, רא"ש, literally "Head"). The Rosh was born in western Germany and died in Toledo, Spain. His family was prominent for learning and piety, his father Yechiel was a Talmudist, and one of his ancestors was Rabbi Eliezer ben Nathan, a grandson of Rabbenu Gershom. Asher had eight sons, the most prominent of whom were Judah and Jacob, author of the Arba'ah Turim, a code of Jewish law.
