Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Aizik Hodakov (12 January 1902 – 23 April 1993) was the chief of staff of the secretariat of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson for more than 40 years. From 1950, until his death, Hodakov served as chairman of Agudas Chasidei Chabad, the umbrella organization of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

Rabbi Chaim Hodakov

Rabbi Chaim Hodakov, who has died in New York at the age of 91, was the Lubavitcher Rebbe's chief of staff and his aide for over 40 years.

Born in Beshenkovichi, in Belarus, he was taken to Riga, Latvia, aged two. He was appointed principal of the Torah V'Derech school in Riga at 18 and was soon after named head of Jewish education for the Latvian Ministry of Education.

He met the previous Lubavitch head, Rabbi Yosef Schneerson, who .moved from Russia to Latvia in 1928, and started working for his movement. He and his wife, Ethel, herself a teacher and writer, accompanied the Schneerson family to the US, when they fled from Poland in 1940.

He was made head of the Lubavitch movement's educational, social welfare and publishing departments, and became head of the present Lubavitcher Rebbe's secretariat when Rabbi Menachem Schneerson succeeded his father-in-law in 1950.

As Lubavitch expanded, Rabbi Hodakov was appointed chairman of Agudat Chassidei Chabad, the movement's worldwide umbrella.

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
