Dr Moritz Salzberger – rabbi of Chełmno in the years 1878 till 1886. Born on June 15th, 1844 in Also-Kubin, Hungary. He studied oriental sciences and philology at the Universities in Wrocław and Vienna and obtained a Doctor’s degree in 1871 at the Halle University. He arrived in Chełmno in 1877 or 1878. He left the town to settle in Erfurt in 1886.

IN 1870 SOME 40 MEMBERS OF LIBERAL VIEWS WITHDREW FROM THE COMMUNITY, ESTABLSHED THEIR OWN SYNAGOGUE, AND OPENED A SCHOOL OF SIX CLASSES. THE RABBIS OF THIS DISSIDENT COMMUNITY WERE: DR. SIGMUND MAYBAUM, DR. MOR SALZBERGER, DR. JACOB REISS, AND DR. S. FEUERSTEIN. THE MOTHER COMMUNITY FUNCTIONED AFTER THE SPLIT UNDER THE NAME OF “SHOMREI HA- DAT” (GUARDIANS OF THE RELIGION).
