The DAR database notes that there is no proof of Rachel Bland's maiden name as "Powell."
Why Rachel Bland is not likely the daughter of Jacob Powell and Julia Ann File Powell:
Many jump to the conclusion that the granddaughter of Robert Powell (Jacob's father) mentioned in Robert's will is Rachel Bland. She is noted as Rachel Duke. Either she is the unmarried daughter of another daughter no longer living and noted or she could not be Rachel Bland. The will was written in 1773 after Rachel _____ married William Bland and already had one if not two children by him. One source noted that Rachel Bland was married 1st to a John Duke and then to William Bland, but the dates still do not add up with the date of the will.
Rachel Unknown may be a Powell, but not likely the daughter of Jacob. She is listed on some profiles as being born in Duplin County. I cannot find a source for this, but it is all over the place as Duplin County. Jacob and his wife "Ann" seem to have lived most of their lives in Chowan County, NC, some distance away. Though I did find that the Powell family may have been Quakers as were the Blands.
If anyone can find proof, otherwise, please confirm. Also, a source for Rachel's birth and location would be nice. SFGunter
